Illinois named among top pre-med universities
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was named among the top colleges for undergraduate students who want to apply to medical school and pursue medical degrees at the graduate level, according to a new ranking.
The website Online College Plan rated the top 20 med schools in the United States, with Illinois placing fourth behind only the University of Michigan, the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Florida.
The schools were rated on a 200-point system, with equal weight being given to freshmen retention and graduation rate. The methodology focused on three choices of pre-med degrees: undergraduate degrees in biology, chemistry, or physics.
Illinois garnered 179 of 200 points, thanks to a 94-percent freshman retention rate and 85-percent graduation rate.
The university is lauded by the website for its "world-leading innovative university," as well as majors that include biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular and cellular Biology, and Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, a department within the College of Applied Health Sciences.
